Be Part of HUMMS!

Why incoming SHS must choose HUMMS track?

As we all know, Senior High School in the Philippines offers four major tracks which are Academic Track, Technical-Vocational Livelihood (TVL), Sports Track, and Arts & Design Track. The Academic track then offers four strands which are Accountancy Business and Management (ABM), General Academic Strand (GAS), Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM). And HUMSS. Well, HUMSS stands for Humanities and Social Sciences. It’s a strand focused on literature, politics, religion and social sciences. It helps improve student’s reading, writing, speaking and social skills, and the skills this strand is trying to develop are critically needed for students who want to take up journalism, education, and other social science-related courses in college. And it is not an easy strand like everybody thinks. Yes, you may not have to face formulas, numbers, and chemicals but you will deal with a lot of reading and comprehension. And this strand is just as challenging as the others but if your passion is related in the subjects offered in HUMSS, it’s guaranteed that you will enjoy and learn a lot in this strand.

Now going back to the question, why did I chose HUMSS?

Well, for a career I’m aiming to be a seafarer. At first I didn’t understood why being a seaman falls under HUMSS  but someone told me and my friends who are aiming to be a seafarer too that it’s under the HUMSS strand, so we just kinda went for it. But later on, after a few months I understood why and I’m lucky I made the right choice. BS Marine Transport (BSMT) operates on the deck unlike BS Marine Engineer (BSMARe) which operates on the engine. BSMT focuses not only on the navigation of the ship but also on one’s ability to communicate with their deck mates and also with the passengers (if it’s on a cruise ship). Since one of the focuses of HUMSS or rather the skills it is trying to develop is public communication, this strand is a perfect match for me and the other students who will take up BSMT. In addition, it also focuses on Religion and belief systems, take up for example if I’ll meet a Muslim or Daoist etc. on the ship. Since I’ve taken up HUMSS, I will have enough knowledge on that person and what his/her beliefs are. And if ever the situation forces me to talk to him/her, I will not offend him/her and his/her beliefs and traditions. That’s why up to now, I don’t have regrets choosing HUMSS because this will strand will serve as a stepping stone for me and for the things I want to achieve.
